Description Coal bed methane being a green and clean coal technology, holds significant prospect for Indian to ensure energy supply in near future to the relevant industries and also provides a better potential option for mitigating green house gas emission by carbon sequestration within the coal beds for geological time scale. Considering its importance for utilization, Government of India is trying to promote the production of CBM by encouraging both national and international explorer with transparent bidding criteria and establishing production wells in various coalfields of the country. Being among the largest coal producer in the world, Indian coalfields provide substantial CBM resources, which can ensure both energy security and dual role in environmental impact; to less pollution and storage carbon dioxide from atmosphere. The present paper discusses some of the salient aspects and the problems associated with coal bed methane technology adopted in the developed countries along with remedies so that the CBM production might be encouraged in the country and the solution could be found for the challenges for sustainable development.
