Description Beach placer mining is entirely different from other mining operations. Infact, it is the collection of minerals from on-shore and off-shore areas up to 3 to 6 meters above the water table and simultaneous backfilling of the sand. In the present paper, unnecessary duplication and complications in the procedures of completing all the formalities for getting clearance from the concerned authorities have been pointed out in detail. Various problems and solutions of beach placer mining related to exploration, exploitation, enrichment, environment, economy and market, empowerment and policy, and education and establishment of R&D have been discussed well. It also presents various issues related to unfeasibility in adopting existing mining legislation for placer mining industries related to appointments, fixation of norms on the limits of pollutants, getting or extending the lease areas and clearing EIA/EMP. The paper presents the strategies to streamline the R&D activities through apex body or separate management board. The paper also highlights the importance of easy access to get publications and other related data, public awareness programme, quality control, uniform mode of exploration, laboratory facilities and close monitoring of placer reserves are to be considered for the sustainable development of beach placer minerals and its value-added products in the country.
