Description Coal, a naturally occurring combustible solid, is one of the world's most important and abundant energy sources. Coal plays a very crucial role in the world’s economy and India is no exception. Coal characterization is one aspect that enables one to understand the properties of coal and find its best possible utilization. The basics of chemistry has always helped in proper coal analysis and provided an in-depth understanding of coal. The physico-chemical characterization of coal that includes proximate and ultimate analysis of coal allows one to arrive at the best possible utilization of coal. Besides this, knowing the chemistry and the reactions involved in coal burning and formation of ash along with its characteristics will enable one to alter the reactions for getting the good quality ash. The present paper focuses on the nature and distribution of ash forming constituents in coal and its chemistry. The very basic of chemistry involved in the ash formation from coal have been highlighted along with the reactions that usually take place during the ash forming stage from the constituents responsible for the formation of ash.
