Description |
Land subsidence is one of the most common and hazardous consequences mining industry which gives a constant threat to the safety of surface infrastructures such as motorways, railways, power line and telecommunication cables etc. It is evident that ground subsidence due to underground mining is of major concern to the coal mining industry. The current techniques tomonitor ground subsidence on a point-by-point basis are cumbersome, time consuming and costlyand is usually constrained to localized areas, differentiallnterferometric synthetic Aperture Rader (DInSAR) s a remote sensing technique that can measure earth surface deformationwith good accuracy. DInSARis capable of obtaining dense information related to the deformation across a large arealike gas reservoir, oil fields etc. in an efficient and economic manner. This paper focuses on the capabilities and limitations of different techniques of subsidence measurement such as leveling, Differential Global positioning System (DGPS) and DInSAR. Apart from these, other techniques such as total station system, photogrammetrical survey, borehole inclinometer-extensometers and tape extensometer are also discussed in brief.
