Description Background/aim: Foaming occurs in the in-bath smelting processes due to the formation of a large amount of gases during reduction reactions of iron oxides with the reductant, and it affects the kinetics of reduction. The study of kinetics of smelting reduction incorporating the effect of foaming behaviour is rather difficult in hot conditions. In this paper, it is therefore aimed to study the foaming phenomena in cold conditions using a NaH-CO3-HCl-oil reaction system. Results: The effect of foaming on reduction kinetics of a sodium-bi-carbonate - HCl - oil system simulating the reacting system (DRI-C-sat.hot metal-slag) of an in-bath smelting reduction process is studied. The foaming causes an oil layer simulating the slag to expand, and the foam-height initially increases and subsequently tends to decrease as the reduction proceeds. The kinetic analysis includes the foaming behaviour in terms of foam-height and foaming index. However, in case of a non-reacting system (soap solution - air), the foam-height tends to increase until it attains a maximum, constant level. Conclusion: Foaming enhances the reaction rate by 1.5-2.5x the reaction rate without foaming. This has been attributed to the large surface area available for the reaction due to gas hold-up in the foam.
