Description |
The paper describes the essential features of the liquid metal centrifuge developed at the National Metallurgical Laboratory, for studying the structure of liquid metallic alloys. Regarding liquid metals structurally as a suspension of clusters of either like or unlike atoms in truly liquid atoms, the technique, which is based on obtaining a sedimentation equilibrium of cluster, enabled the Al-Cu alloys. The cluster size so determined can be correlated with viscosity of the liquid solutions and enabled the calculation of the heat of formation of the cluster.
