Description Usefulness of Pilot Stations and Plants - Applied industrial research is generally done either in the actual plant or in laboratories. While production plant research disturbs the normal fabricating operations, lacks accuracy and often involves high costs, results of laboratory tests are generally difficult to extrapolate to industrial pra-ctice. Industrial research must therefore incorporate an intermediate stage where tests are made halfway between laboratory and industrial production scales. After a dis-cussion on the above lines the author examines in details the various aspects relating to choice of pilot plant cap-acity, translation to industrial production, technical administration problems and liaison between laboratory and pilot plant. A brief mention is made of the scope of full scale pilot plants where experimenting is carried out on a full scale and the steps to be taken for optimum operating conditions are indicated.
