Description Under consideration of reducing fuel consumption in vehicle, low weight of steels body is major requirement in automobile industries, therefore an attempt is made to develop an alloy which has high strength to weigh ratio by addition of aluminium into the steel and developing Fe-Al-C all oy steel at a low cost as compared to commercially available steels, which makes the alloy a center of attraction. But, the main drawback to why the alloy has notfound its commercial application yet is that the ductility obtained presently in the alloy is very very low or even one can say that the alloy presently shows no ductility. For increasing the ductility of the alloy have been emphasized in the present work. The ductility has been sought to increase through additions of various alloying elements and by achieving a phase Fe3AlC0.5. It was found that as aluminum increased in the steel the density decreased. However poor ductility and machinability limited their use for many automobile and structural applications. The effect of Cr, Nb and Ti on the mechanical properties of the Fe-Al-C alloy steel was studied. Hardness and tensile strength, at ambient temperature, of as cast Fe-Al-C alloys are a function of Cr, Nb and Ti content. Hardness slightly decreased due to addition of alloying elements and therefore machinability improved. Room temperature tensile strength of Fe-Al-C alloy was increased by addition of Nb and Nb+Cr but there was slight changed in the percentage elongation.
