Description Iron ore fines are generated while mining and are of grave concern as far as pollution and loss of economy is concerned. These iron fines can be agglomerated in many forms. Agglomeration helps in the usage of the fines for further processing in smelting furnace. Iron ore fines are generally used as pellets or sinter. There is a size enhancement from 325 mesh or 3mm to 20mm of the iron ore fines . Sinter or Pellet is reduced by carbon monoxide or hydrogen to pure iron inside Blast furnace or DR/SR unit. The reduction is diffusion controlled or interfacial controlled. Hence it was thought of increasing the surface area of the agglomerated product to promote better reduction. Thus a new product such as hollow agglomerate ( Briquettes) in a form of a cylinder with a hole inside is proposed in this work. Cylindrical agglomerates were made with the help of a special die and punch having dimension 3 cm height and 2cm diameter of three different types: (a) Cylindrical hollow agglomerate having a central hole of diameter 4 mm. (b) Cylindrical hollow agglomerate having a central hole of diameter 8 mm. (c) Cylindrical hollow agglomerate having a central hole of diameter 10 mm. These hollow agglomerates were made with different types of binders such as bentonite, starch, dextrin, molasses and their physical properties determined. These cylindrical hollow agglomerates were manufactured by mixing iron ore fines with pure graphite powder and their reduction behavior studied.
