Description Nanocrystalline(nc)and ultra fine grain(UFG) nickel was produced by electrode position technique in the size range of 25–500nm and its effect on mechanical behaviour was studied by nanoindentation technique. The grain size was found to influence the strain rate sensitivity(m) and showed a decreasing trend with increase in grain size. Effect of grain size on creep behaviour and relevant creep parameters like creep strain rate and stress exponent(n) were estimated for different grain sizes. While creep strain rate did not vary much with grain size, n was found to be very high. The experimental findings suggested dislocation-grain boundary interaction as the rate controlling deformation mechanism. Cyclic nanoindentation tests were performed to understand the role of grain boundaries in the plasticde formation.
