Description Corrosion is one of the serious problems faced in the aeronautical industry. There is a need to upgrade environmental friendly coatings especially for the aeronautical industry. Polyelectrolyte multilayers built via layer-by-layer method has been one of the most favourable method in anticorrosive coatings. Multilayers can be constructed by the electrostatic interaction of the polyelectrolytes. In our study, we focused on fabrication of polyelectrolyte multilayers by using weak polycation polyethylene mine (PEI) and strong polyanion poly-4-styrene sulfonate (PSS) doped with the inhibitor 8-hydroxyquinoline(8HQ)(PEI/PSS/8HQ/PSS)20/30) using LBL method. The coatings were evaluated for their corrosion protection efficiency on AA2024-T3 by adapting the accelerated corrosion tests. The effect of thermal crosslinking was also investigated. Coatings with 30 layers indicated almost 8 times greater self-healing and corrosion protection compared to 20 layers, Addition of inhibitor 8HQ improved the protection marginally. Thermal cross linking at 100°C further improved the coating protection efficiency. The coatings were stable up to 48hr in NaCl.
