Description 284-290
Interpenetrating polymer based on camphor and poly(antimonyacrylate) using benzoylperoxide (BPO) as an initiator and divinyl benzene as cross-linking agent have been synthesized. The formation of IPN has been confirmed by presence of two-phase in SEM photographs. The IR spectrum reveals a band at 1730 cm-1 due to –C=O group and at 3030 cm-1 due to aromatic C–C stretching of phenyl group. Specific rotation [<img src='/image/spc_char/alpha.gif' border=0>]25 = + 43.2° is observed for IPN (whereas that of pure camphor is 43.5 ± 1). The shifting of band from 1705 cm-1 to 1730 cm-1, due to carbonyl group of camphor confirms the formation of complex between camphor and poly(antimony acrylate). The value of mutual interaction constant (<i style="">k</i>AB) between polymer (A) and camphor (B) in DMSO, DMF, dioxan are calculated as DMSO (<i style="">k</i>AB = 0.7), DMF (<i style="">k</i>AB = 0.63) and dioxan (<i style="">k</i>AB = 0.22). The properties like percentage swelling, average molecular weight between crosslinks (<i style="">M</i>c), Young’s modulus are generally direct function of [poly (antimonyacrylate)] and [divinyl benzene]. The values of glass transition temperature (<i style="">T</i>g) and activation energy (<i style="">E</i>a) of IPN, calculated from DSC and TGA, are 240°C and 25 kJ/mol, respectively.
