Iodine has been found to be an effective catalyst for protection of <img src='/image/spc_char/alpha.gif' border=0>-hydroxy acids under mild reaction conditions. Various <img src='/image/spc_char/alpha.gif' border=0>-hydroxy acids could be protected using cyclohexanone derivatives in high yield in presence of a catalytic amount of iodine at room temperature. This method has further been extended for the synthesis of <span style="font-family:Symbol;mso-ascii-font-family:" times="" new="" roman";="" mso-hansi-font-family:"times="" roman";mso-char-type:symbol;mso-symbol-font-family:="" symbol;mso-bidi-font-weight:bold"="" lang="EN-GB"><img src='/image/spc_char/alpha.gif' border=0><span style="mso-bidi-font-weight:bold" lang="EN-GB">-hydroxy lactone from l-(+)-malic acid. </span></span> |
