Description |
Absorption spectra of Mn2+ ion in alumino-boro-phosphate, magnesium-aluminoborate and soda-lime-silica glasses were studied within the range, 16000 cm-1 30000 cm-1 Five absorption bands were observed at or around 19200 cm-1 [4Γ4(G)], 23300 cm-1 [4Γ5(G)], 24000 cm-1 [4Γ3,4Γ1 (G)], 28100 cm-1 [4Γ5 (D)] and 29300 cm-1 [4Γ3 (D)]. Good agreement was noticed between the observed band positions and the values calculated from ligand field considerations. The molar extinction co-efficient varied with glass composition. It is about ten times higher than that in aqueous solution and is nearly one hundredth of the corresponding value due to Mn3+ ion in the same base glass. The spectrophotometric and fluorescence studies reveal that Mn2+ ion is present mostly in octahedral coordination in alumino-boro-phosphate glass. In the silicate glasses probably the tetrahedral co-ordination is more predominant. © 1966 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.
