A biologically relevant natural pigment, 1,6-dihydroxy-3-methyl-9,10-anthraquinone <strong>1</strong>, widely produced by fungus from <em>Phoma </em> genus, has been isolated from <em>Cassia sophera</em> Linn. (Caesalpiniaceae) roots and subjected to detailed spectral studies, including 1D- and 2D-NMR. The compound <strong>1</strong> inhibits the proliferation of several cancer cell lines at different extents, showing minor effects on the growth of non-tumorogenic keratinocyte cells.
