Conditions have been verified for the electro generation of Co(III) from Co(II) in aqueous nitric acid, sulphuric acid and perchloric acid. The Co(III) species formed have been identified and characterized. The stability of a standard solution of Co(III) has been studied and conditions for the volumetric determination of the probable number of electrons involved in the oxidation of certain classes of compounds by Co(III) in different acids, have been investigated. Oxidation products have been identified and the stoichiometries established. The number of electrons involved in these redox reactions are dependent on the nature of the reductant molecules and the reaction conditions.
