Description 873-876
The kinetics of oxidative hydrolysis of aromatic anils by potassium bromate have been studied in acetic acid (50%, v/v) containing HCIO4 (0.20 mol dm-3) at 27±0.2ᵒC in the presence of Hg(OAc)2 (0.01 mol dm-3). The reaction exhibits total second order kinetics-first order in each reactant. The presence of electron withdrawing group like <em>p-</em>NO2 in the aniline portion increases the rate markedly. A mechanism involving nitrene intermediate, is proposed to account for the stoichiometry and products, namely, benzaldehyde and azobenzene.
