Description 1009-1011
Salicylic acid (SA) has been determined in pharmaceuticals, viz., ointments via the ion-pair formation with [Co(BPTC)2]+ where BPTC = 2-benzoyl pyridine thiosemicarbazone. The ion-pair is extracted into isobutyl methyl ketone within the <em>p</em>H range 8.5-10.8, the organic phase aspirated into flame AAS, the cobalt content determined and hence indirectly salicylic acid has been determined. The limit of detection value is found to be 22 ng ml-1 of SA and the method is free of interferences of many organic compounds.
