Size exclusion chromatography of a sample of pyrene containing polyacrylamide has been examined in 0.2 <em>M </em> Na<sub>2</sub>SO<sub>4</sub> using μ-Bondagel as the stationary phase. Refractive index(RI) and UV (340nm) detectors have been used for detecting total concentration and as specific detector for pyrene respectively. For the two detectors the peak retention volumes are identical but the values for <em>M</em><sub>w</sub>/<em>M</em><sub>n</sub> differ. Inclusion of 0.05% sodium dodecyl sulphate in the mobile phase yields <em>M</em><sub>w</sub>/<em>M</em><sub>n</sub> values also in good agreement. This is ascribed to the surfactant overcoming the hydrophobic effects due to the presence of pyrene in the polymer. |
