Description One of the major challenges in transportation industry is the development of new structural materials with higher strength-to-weight ratios to reduce fuel consumption. Amongst conventional engineering materials magnesium possess very low density, excellent castability and superior machinability. Now-a-day the primary focus is to develop new generation of composite materials capable of exhibiting good combination of thermal, mechanical, oxidation and other properties. Amongst various methods, stir casting is considered to be easily adaptable and economically viable due to its low processing cost and high production rate. In this paper, work done by various researchers for the fabrication of magnesium composite by stir casting method has been discussed in detail. An attempt has been made to consolidate some of the aspects of mechanical and metallurgical behavior of magnesium matrix composites.
