Description The white spot syndrome virus (WSSV) is causing a serious concern and threat to the shrimp aquaculture production in India since 1994. In this paper, the result of a successful attempt made in formulating a plant extract for treating the WSSV infection in penaeid shrimp is reported. The main ingredients in the composition are the extracts of plants Lantena camera, Aegle marmelos, Ocimum sanctum, Mimosa pudica, Cynodon dactylon, Curcuma longa and Allium sativum. The extract at 5 and 15 ppm concentrations were found to be effective in controlling and treating the viral infection. However, 15 ppm concentration was found to be more effective as improvements in both clinical and behavioural aspects were noticed within two days of the treatment and the mortality was also negligible (less than 5%). Histopathology of the treated shrimps also showed improvement in the health. The study also indicated the prophylactic property of the extract against WSSV infection. However, the study was carried out only under laboratory conditions and therefore, field trials trials have to be conducted to work out the effective dosage and frequency of application depending on the type of culture practice, density of stocking, intensity of infection, etc. The plant extract has been granted the US patent (No.: 6,440,466) during the year 2002 with claims on composition, formulation and treatment and is also awaiting patent grant in India and some Asian and Latin American countries.
