Description Tsunamis are surface gravity waves that are triggered due to perturbation of the ocean floor. The tsunamis that occurred in the Indian Ocean on 26 December 2004 were due to an earthquake off the coast of Sumatra. Sea level variations associated with this event are summarized after a brief introduction to tsunamis.
