This paper describes a tentative methodology for13; the testing of appropriate technology design windpumps13; and some early experience in operation of a relatively13; simple test-fields. This testing serves three purposes.13; One is comparative assessment under identical conditions.Second is keeping an impartial record of maintenance requirements. Third is to generate performance data to enable prediction of the quantity of water likely to be lifted on gross monthly basis at different places. The 10 minutes data generated intermittently can be utilised where velocity distribution profiles are known. This is the case at 37 places in India.only monthly mean wind speeds are known.24-hourly performance data can be used in making first approximation of expected month wise output. At the the of writing this paper three windmills are under assessment. All these are somewhat different in design concerning performance of these machines presented.13; Two more are being installed shortly. Observations are briskly presented.
