Description |
An experimental investigation is carried out to study the broad features of jet flow development13; from a 2:1 elliptic nozzle using tabs in the minor-axis plane. Further, two types of tab geometries13; are studied, namely, triangular and square with identical blockage area. Each tab conforms to13; 0.5% of the total nozzle exit area. The jet velocity is 21m/s and the Reynolds number based on13; exit equivalent diameter of the nozzle is 5400. PIV visualization studies reveal that each tab13; (irrespective of its shape) sheds a pair of counter-rotating streamwise vortices that help enhance13; overall mixing in major-axis plane. However, in the minor-axis plane, a small vortex originates13; downstream of the square tab top-edge that significantly alters the near-field jet development13; process. As the tab top-edge diminishes to a point (i.e, triangular shape), this small vortex13; structure disappears and so in this case the tab produces only a pair of counter-rotating vortices.13; The results suggest that the tab top-edge shape plays a significant role in the near-field flow13; development in jets by altering the shear layer vortex dynamics considerably.
