Description The study of co-flow jets is relevant both from scientific curiosity as well as its applications in the areas of combustion, cooling system; chemical kinetics and high bypass ratio engine flows. This paper presents the establishment of a co flow jet facility and subsequent experimental studies of the near flow field using a two dimensional Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV). The inner jet is formed from a 2:1 aspect ratio elliptic nozzle and the outer from a circular nozzle. The calibration results obtained using hotwire showed a high degree of flow symmetry, uniformity, and low exit turbulence. The PIV measurements were made in the near field for the velocity ratio of 0.3 and 1.5. The ensemble averaged PIV data brought out development of the elliptic jet flow in the presence of the co flow. The mean velocity and turbulence velocity components are obtained in the major and minor plane of the elliptic jet. Significant features observed include the reduction in the jet growth in the minor plane and the absence of axis switching in the presence of co flow.
