Description A fractured plunger of brake parachute release mechanism of an aircraft was analyzed. Fractographic study suggests that the failure had taken place by bending overload. There were no evidences of progressive failure such as fatigue. The material of the plunger was found to conform to the specification. Analysis shows that bending load on the free end of the plunger is probably unavoidable in the assembly. It is suggested that this be taken into account and the wall thickness be increased accordingly to avoid recurrence of similar failure. Alternatively, the free end may be made solid, if weight penalty is permissible.
