Description The steam turbine blade in question had failed by fatigue. The fatigue crack had initiated at the trailing edge and propagated progressively towards the leading edge before giving rise to an overload failure. The fatigue appears to be of high cycle – low stress type. The investigation revealed pitting, corrosion and deposition of thick layer of SiO2 on the blade airfoil. The contamination of steam with SiO2 and Cl was responsible for pitting corrosion and subsequent fatigue crack initiation. No metallurgical and/or mechanical abnormalities were responsible for the fatigue crack initiation.
