Evidences suggest that the Merox gas off line to crude heater has failed by gradual loss of material from the inner surface of the tube in localized regions by corrosion. It appears most probable that deposition of scales resulted in increase in local temperature beyond 7230C. The high quantity of S present in the scale led to localized sulfide corrosion.
