Description Three out of the four fasteners sent for investigation were found to have fractured in the threaded region. The fractographic features were completely obliterated due to post fracture corrosion. However, microstructural study and compositional analysis confirmed that the failure of the studs was by chloride stress corrosion cracking (SCC). Examination revealed that the SCC was promoted due to high hardness of the studs. Measurements showed that studs have average hardness of 582 HV as against the specification of 321 BHN. A detailed analysis of the failure is presented in this report.
