Description Cracked bottom plates of a wet slop tank were forwarded to the laboratory for analysis. Observations revealed that a number of cracks have initiated in the steel plates and propagated across the weld joints. The cracks were found progressive in nature. Analysis showed that the most probable reason for cracking of the plates was sulfide stress corrosion cracking, a form of hydrogen stress cracking.
