Description A polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) superhydrophobic coating was prepared using magnetron sputtering process. The PTFE coating was deposited on sand blasted glass substrates with different substrate roughness (Ra) in the range of 50 - 7000 nm. The PTFE coatings were characterized using X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, contact angle analyzer and atomic force microscopy techniques. The PTFE coatings deposited on sand blasted glass substrates (Ra = 4500-4800 nm) were found to be superhydrophobic with a static contact angle of 152 and a low contact angle hysteresis (2). In order to investigate the influence of substrate roughness on the wetting properties, we have carried out a quantitative study of effect of substrate roughness on contact angle and surface free energy (SFE) of sputter deposited PTFE coatings.
