Description Fractographic features revealed that the buckle latch in question has failed in a ductile mode and there were no evidences of preexisting crack and/or embrittlement of steel. The microstructure and hardness were as per the specification. However, metallographic study disclosed presence of large quantities of iron oxide in the failed latch. It is believed that these nonmetallic inclusions were responsible for low impact toughness of the material resulting in failure of the component during the dynamic test. Analysis suggests that the iron oxide was exogenous and was included in the material due to entrapment of scale in the material during hot working operations.
