Description The exhaust pipe of the MICROLITE aircraft has failed by fatigue. Fatigue crack has initiated at the smaller tube – weld interface on the outer surface of the exhaust tube and propagated progressively along the circumference to about 45 mm length before culminating in overload fracture. No weld and/or metallurgical abnormalities were found responsible for fatigue crack initiation. Fatigue is of high cycle – low stress type and is stress related. The most probable reason for fatigue crack initiation appears to be assembly stresses.
