Description |
Welded clusters from body structures of a particular type of helicopter, which showed corrosion in NDT were sent to laboratory for analysis. Three out of the five clusters were found to have corrosion damage to a varying extent. All these were 8D clusters and they belong to body structures M 682, H/ABS/173 and H/ABS/156 respectively. In all these cases, the corrosion was in the form of pitting corrosion and confined mainly to tubes 8D2D and 8D3D. While the corrosion was severe in the clusters of body structures H/ABS/173 and H/ABS/156, the same in the body structure M 682 was superficial in nature. The pitting corrosion has taken place by atmospheric oxidation. It appears most probable that corrosion had started in the clusters in question during welding itself and progressed further with time. Since identical procedures were followed for the fabrication of body structure and they were in service in identical conditions, the only possible factor that appears to have played a role for the corrosion in selective clusters is the moisture content in the atmosphere at the time of welding. A detailed analysis of the problem is presented in this report.
