Description The wind tunnel tests on a DR-AS-02 configuration missile model were suspended following the development of cracks at the leading edge of the wings. The wings were disassembled from the model and forwarded to the laboratory to analyse the cause of cracking. Investigation revealed fatigue cracks of varying lengths in all the four wings of the model. The fatigue cracks were found to have originated at the fillet of the wing root at the leading edge and propagated progressively towards the trailing edge along the fillet. Fatigue appears to be of high cycle – low stress type and stress related. No metallurgical abnormalities were found responsible for the fatigue crack initiation. Analysis indicates that the most probable reason for fatigue crack initiation is due to high stress concentrations at the fillet of the wing root. After initiation, the fatigue cracks appear to have propagated under the vibratory load of the wings.
