Description Superhydrophobic thin films of Cd-CdO were prepared on plain glass substrates by thermal oxidation of sputtered Cd. These coatings were prepared at different oxygen flow rates, coating thicknesses and oxidation temperatures. The coatings were characterized using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), X-ray diffraction, micro-Raman spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy and contact angle goniometer. The FESEM images showed the presence of a porous microstructure, leading to one scale of roughness (higher). High magnification FESEM images showed that the textured Cd-CdO nanoclusters were formed as a result of fusion of individual CdO nanocrystals. The textured Cd-CdO nanoclusters are believed to form second scale of roughness (i.e., lower). These two hierarchal scales of roughness on nanometric scales led to superhydrophobicity in Cd-CdO coatings with contact angle as high as 160. Studies based on the deposition of CdO coatings on substrates with micron scale roughness indicated that additional micron-scale roughness of the substrate does not affect the wettability of Cd-CdO coatings.
