Description The second stage compressor rotor drum in question has failed by fatigue. Fatigue cracks were found to have initiated at the rivet holes. No metallurgical abnormalities were found responsible for the fatigue crack initiation and fatigue appeared to be stress related. The most probable reason for fatigue crack initiation appears to be improper rivet contact with the rivet hole on the drum. This has resulted in excessive deformation in localized regions leading to stress concentrations and fatigue cracks initiation. A detailed analysis of the failure is presented in this report.
