Description |
Two service failed components, namely, a worm shaft and a pin belonging to power steering systems were received for analysis. Fractographic examination revealed that both the components have failed by overload. There were no metallurgical abnormalities responsible for the failure. Also, there were no evidences of delayed failure like fatigue. It appears most probable that the components have failed due to some inadvertent overload. The reason for such overload needs to be established and corrective measures incorporated to prevent recurrence of similar failures.
