Description During a shut down operation, about 16 crude heater tube support hangars were found to have cracks in the clevis lugs. The cracked clevis lug of one such tube was sent to the laboratory to analyse the cause of failure. Investigation revealed that the support hangar has failed by Stress Corrosion Cracking (SCC). Microstructural study indicated that the hangar material got sensitized due to prolonged heating to 7000C in service leading to SCC. The parent material did not have any metallurgical abnormalities and it was found to conform to ASTM A297 Gr HK specification.
