Description This paper is concerned with new developments in the field of high temperature thermoelectric materials both from the point of view of thermoelectric power generation based on Seebeck effect and local area cooling based on Peltier effect. The efficiency of the thermoelectric generator/cooler is determined by the figure of merit viz., ZT=s2/K where S is the thermoelectric power,  and K are the electrical and thermal conductivity of the materials used in the fabrication of these devices. Characterisation of these thermal and electronic parameters is of vital importance in the engineering design of the device. Techniques for automated measurement of thermoelectric power, electrical conductivity and thermal conductivity will be discussed.
