Description The Background Oriented Schlieren (BOS) technique has been successfully validated and used for several complex flows including supersonic jet flows and afterbody flows. The technique which incorporates the Filtered Back Project Tomography is capable of extracting the desired plane of interest from the flow field. However, all previous applications have been either nominally 2D or axisymmetric despite the technique making no limiting assumptions of two-dimensionality or axisymmetry. This proposal aims to apply the BOS technique on an elliptic cone at small incidence, at supersonic speeds; and map the fully three-dimensional density field which can then be compared against Euler computations which are fairly easy. This would enable the validation of this technique and allow for routine application to map 30 density fields on aerospace vehicles at any angle of attack. Such data has immense importance for understanding flow physics and validation of CFD codes.
