Description This document reports the experimental results of the flow development processes in linear-plug nozzles in the base flow facility at NAL. Two configurations, namely full-length spike and 40% plug, were chosen. Further the effect of different freestream conditions was studied by estimating the nozzle performance. Under static tests, the performance of the full-length spike nozzle shows a reduction of 5-6% relative to the ideal nozzle. In the presence of freestream conditions, the performance drops further by 1-2%. Truncating the full-length spike to 40% length reduces the performance by another 4-5%. Under "closed-wake" conditions, the performance of 40% plug drops by another 3%. It is suggested that (i) the internal nozzle axis by inclined towards the plug surface, (ii) the plug surface be appropriately contoured for enhanced altitude compensating characteristics and, (iii) adding an appropriate base-bleed system to improve the base thrust contribution to overall nozzle performance. The benefits of such a study can go in improving the payload capacity of the launch vehicle or RLV.
