Description Edge tearing/cracking of sheet metal was noticed during cold forming operation of sliding plates of seat assembly of an automobile vehicle. Investigation revealed that the cracking was due to presence of excessive amount of non-metallic inclusions in the plate material. Microstructural study showed that the inclusion rating in the cracked plate material was ASTM B Thick series, 2 to 3 against the specification of Thin series, 0.5 to 1. The same in the uncracked plate material was found to be B Thin series, 1. It is recommended that cleaner material as per the specification be used to prevent recurrence of similar failures. In addition, inclusion-rating check in the raw material test schedule be incorporated as an acceptance/rejection criterion.
