Description |
The corrosion behavior of TiN, CrN, NbN, TiAlN, TiAlN/CrN coatings deposited on mild steel substrate using a multi-target reactive DC magnetron sputtering process was investigated in a 3.5% NaCl solution in non-deaerated condition. Potentiodynamic tests and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) were the techniques used to study the characteristics of the corrosion behavior. Total thickness of coating was about 0.5 m thickness of chromium interlayer. it was found that NbN coating had lower corrosion current density from potentiodynamic studies than those of the other single layer coatings. Higher concentration of Al (50%) in TiAlN showed better corrosion resistance. Multilayer TiAlN/CrN with more number of interfaces (N=40) exhibited better corrosion resistance. EIS measurements carried out on single layer TiN, CrN, NbN and TiAlN coatings with Cr as interlayer showed the presence of pores and TiAlN coating showed Warburg behavior also. The corroded surface morphologies were examined by Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM).
