Description A damaged bearing from an aeroengine was analyzed. Microscopic examination revealed heat effects on the inner diameter as well as the raceway of the inner ring. Material removal by spalling was observed on the roller contact area of the inner ring raceway. Evidences suggest improper assembly as the most probable cause of failure. It is recommended to maintain the tolerances on the bearing and the shafts within the specification.
