Description |
The modern world is relying more and more on traditional systems of therapy as
allopathic medicine is found to be marred with serious problems such as increased side effects,
lack of effective treatment of several chronic diseases, prohibitive cost of new drugs and
resistance to emerging infectious diseases. The popularity of traditional system of medicine in
the western world is evidenced by the establishment of the National Center for Complimentary
and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) under the National Institute of Health (NIH) in the United
States in order to conduct scientific research into the nonconventional systems of medicine
including Ayurveda. For a chronic and debilitating neurological disorder such as PD no disease
modifying cure exists in the allopathic system of medicine, whereas in the Ayurvedic system the
above mentioned herbal therapy has been successfully used since time immemorial for treating
PD. The need of the hour is to validate the efficacy of this ancient system of medicine in light of
modern biology.
