Description The term lectin has its origin from latin word “legere” means to select or choose. Boyd was the pioneer to bring the lectin into describe a class of protein of plant origin which can agglutinate red blood cells according to their blood group (Boyd, 1954). Although early studies of lectin initiated by Stillmark in 1988 was within the plant source but subsequent discovery of haemaglutinins, agglutinins, phytohemagglutinins in diverse biological sources (e.g. bacteria, sponges, fungi, fishes, snails, eel and even animals) resulted in broadening the term lectin to include carbohydrate binding proteins (or glycoproteins) without regarding to their origin (Sharon, 1972; Goldstein et. al., 1980). Animal lectins are classified as C-lectins, which are Ca++ –dependent and are structurally related to the asialoglycoprotein receptor, and galectins, previously known as S-type lectins, which are thiol dependent and specifically bind β-galactoside residues (Drickamer & Taylor, 1993).
