Description Evaluation of physico - chemical characteristics of coal flyash, its trace elements content and their leaching behaviour are essential requirements for adoptine proper management strategies for environmentally safe disposal management strategy. Flyashes from 4 sources : (a) Chandrapura Thermal Power Plant, Bihar, (b) Jamadoba Thermal Power Plant, Bihar, (c) Durgapur Thermal Power Plant, West Bengal and (d) Ramagundam Thermal Power Plant, Andhra Pradesh have been studied. The samples have been leached with water according to American Society for Testing and Material (ASTM) extraction procedure and the leachates have been analysed to determine the total dissolved solids, hardness, calcium, sulphate, alkalinity, pH and chloride. trace elements concentrations in the leachates have been determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometer (ASS) while the total metals in flyash have been determined by concentrated nitric acid digestion technique followed by AAS analysis. The effect of pH on metal release from flyash has also been studied. A comparative study of different parameters of above flyashes have been done. Suggestions for the better and safe disposal have been described. Future trends have also been enumerated.
