Description Longwall mining of coal offers the potential of improved productivity and safety, higher level of mechanisation and recovery, better ground control and lower unit production cost. The production capacity and unit production cost of a longwall panel is influenced by several variables viz. the dimension of the panel, rate of face advance, physical and chemical characteristics of coal seam, and the geological, tectonic and rock mechanic properties of the mine environment. Thus within the limit set by the physical characteristics of specific mine the length of a longwall face for a specific output is often selected on the basis of optimising the productivity. This generally yields to the selection of the largest practical face length and minimising face operating cost.But, on other hand the gigher value of powered support leads to a shorter face length. Therefore, there must be an optimum face length at which the total operating cost and capital cost are minimised. But, in case of panel length it should be as long as possible depending upon the particular circumstances and layout to minimise the frequency of face transfer.
