Description Spontaneous combustion/fire is one of the serious problems of the coal mining industry. Most of the coal producing countries of the world are facing problem of spontaneous combustion due to intrinsic as well as extrinsic characteristics of coal. Due to fire in coal mines, huse quantity of national resource is being lost and environment is badly affected due to release of noxious gases. Nitrogen is being used for prevention & control of coal mine fires and found very effective. This paper presents comprehensive different case studies on use of nitrogen for prevention and control of spontaneous combustion in coal mines of India and Abroad. It could be observed from the case studies that nitrogen infusion will be more useful for fires of recent origin. In long standing fires also nitrogen can be used but the quantity required may be too high to be economically viable in many cases.
